Types of chair

The chairs here differ less in looks than in what they are for. The catalogue falls into five groups.

Dimensions

Every product page gives the size as W × D × H: width, depth and overall height from the floor to the top of the backrest. Chair dimensions are given in centimetres.

Width

From 44.5 to 51 cm. The narrowest is Finbo, the widest Grace.

Depth

From 42 to 60 cm. Deeper models are easier to sit in for a long time, narrower ones tuck under the table more easily.

Dining chairs, overall height

From 78 to 97 cm. The difference is in the back: KODAMA keeps it low and quiet, Indi Chair carries it high, almost like an armchair.

Lounge chairs

83–87 cm high, 49 cm wide, 47 cm deep.

Bar chair

112 cm, for a counter or island around 100–110 cm high.

When you are working out how many chairs to fit, allow about 60 cm of table length per person — then nobody ends up elbow to elbow.

Wooden seat or soft

This is the main decision in the section, and it is not about looks but about how you actually use your kitchen or dining room.

Hanko and Turku come in both versions, wooden-seated and soft. So you can put wooden chairs in the kitchen and soft ones in the living room and still keep one family of furniture.

What they are made of

The construction is much the same across the range; what differs is what sits on top.

• Frame and legs — Solid oak or beech, finished in lacquer or oil. Some models use black metal.
• Seat base — 18 mm plywood.
• Backrest base — Bent-glued plywood: 8 mm through the curve, 20 mm on the inside, 10 mm on the outside. This is what gives the backrest its curve.
• Filling — Ecofoam — the same orthopaedic foam used in Veneto mattresses. The lounge chairs carry a 40 mm layer.
• Interlayer — A fleece layer between foam and fabric: it holds the shape and stops the foam rubbing against the upholstery.
• Upholstery — Fabrics from our own collections — linen, polyester and velvet.

Wood finishes

The wooden parts come in one of four finishes. Three of them are oils: the oil soaks into the solid wood and leaves the grain visible instead of burying it under a coat of paint.

Natural wax oil (1-007)

The lightest option. The wood stays as it is, only a shade warmer in tone.

White oil (2-001)

Lightens the timber and opens up the room. At home in pale Scandinavian interiors.

Smoked oil (2-003)

A muted greyish-brown. The grain still reads, but more quietly.

Black paint

A solid coat with no grain showing through. For graphic interiors and pairing with metal.

Fabrics

The fabrics are grouped into collections — Standart, Freedom, Glow, Loft, Polaris, Palladium and Vogue — and each collection has its own shades: fourteen colours across the Glow and Perfect ranges. Samples of every fabric are gathered in the Fabric section. A few practical notes while you choose:

• For a kitchen, pick dense fabrics with a smooth weave — a spill lifts off before it soaks in.
• With a cat or a dog in the house, avoid looped textures: claws pull the loops out.
• Light shades make a small room feel larger; dark ones ask less of you when it comes to cleaning.
• If the room already has upholstered furniture, the chair need not match its colour — matching the warmth of the shade is enough.

Care

A few habits that add years to a chair.

• Vacuum the upholstery with a soft attachment about once a week.
• Deal with a spill straight away, blotting rather than rubbing — rubbing drives it into the weave.
• Wipe the wooden parts with a damp, not wet, cloth and dry them at once.
• Once a year, check the leg fixings and tighten them if needed.
• Keep chairs away from radiators and direct sunlight: solid wood dries out and fabric fades.
