Spring Mattresses

Which spring unit should you choose?

The spring unit is what carries the weight of the body, and this category holds five different ones — from the classic Bonnell block to two-level honeycomb systems. Below: how they differ, plus sizes, firmness and what else to look at. If you have not yet decided between spring and springless, start with the full mattress guide.

What is inside

The names here are the ones used in the product specification and in the “Filling” filter, so whatever you pick can be filtered straight away.

Independent spring unit Multi Pocket Spring
Every spring sits in its own fabric pocket, so the mattress follows the body closely and passes on less of your partner’s movement. The most common unit here — nine models out of seventeen.
Honeycomb Multi Pocket Spring
The springs are packed tighter, in a staggered honeycomb layout, so the unit carries more. Double Bico Plus takes up to 170 kg per sleeping place, the highest in the category.
Double Active Zone Multi Pocket Spring System
Two levels of springs, one above the other: the lower level carries the weight, the upper one gives the softness. It does not sag under the heavier partner, so a couple of different weights need not claim sides.
Polymer spring unit Orthopedic Flex
Polymer instead of metal, with five support zones for the shoulders, lower back and hips.
Spring unit Bonnell
The classic: the springs are linked to each other and spread weight evenly. The most affordable option — one model in this category.

Size

Sizes are given in millimetres, exactly as in the product specification: the width of the sleeping surface first, then the length.

800–900 mm

Single

800×1900, 800×2000, 900×1900, 900×2000.

1200–1500 mm

Small double

1200×1900, 1200×2000, 1400×1900, 1400×2000, 1500×1900, 1500×2000.

1600–2000 mm

Double

From 1600×1900 through to 2000×2000 — the widest sleeping surface in the catalogue.

Children’s sizes, 600×1200 and 700×1400, are not made with springs — look for them among the springless mattresses.

Firmness

These are the same four values as the “Firmness” filter on the left. Firmness is matched to weight, sleeping position and your own sense of comfort — not to how soft it feels in the showroom.

Medium
Thirteen models out of seventeen. The most universal option for a weight within the normal range.
Medium firm
Two models. Support closer to firm, without the feel of a hard board.
Firm
Three models, two of them firm on one side only.
Soft
One model — Lux Multi Soft, on a Double Active Zone unit with anatomical foam on top.

Two models, Duet and Yin Yang, are firm on one side and medium on the other: turn the mattress over and the feel changes.

The layers above the unit

The unit decides the support; the layers above it decide how the surface feels.

  • Orthopedic foam Ecofoam — the base in ten models. Elastic; its density sets the firmness.
  • Thermal felt ReFiberMix — separates the springs from the soft layers, holds the shape and lets air through.
  • Natural latexed coir Cocos Shield — a dense layer that adds firmness.
  • Latex foam Aero Latex — a softer, breathable layer used in the higher models.
  • Anatomical foam Memoryfoam — remembers the shape of the body and gives a weightless feel.
  • Natural latex Latex Care — silent and highly adaptive — in Special Bio and Yin Yang.
  • Cottonterm Cotton Filling and Woolterm Wool Layer — the two sides of a winter/summer cover: cotton for the warm months, wool for the cold ones.
  • Perimeter protection system Edge-Support — in sixteen models out of seventeen: the edge holds when you sit down on it.

What else to look at

All of these are listed in the specification of every model, on its own product page.

  • Height runs from 210 to 390 mm. Check it against your bed and against the depth of your fitted sheets.
  • Maximum load runs from 90 to 170 kg per sleeping place.
  • The winter/summer cover: on most models here the two sides differ, one of them warmer.
  • The warranty runs from 18 months to 20 years, depending on the model.
  • Spring models do not come with a removable cover — a mattress protector does that job.

Questions and answers

How do spring units differ?
In an independent unit every spring sits in its own pocket and compresses on its own. In a linked unit the springs are joined to one another, so a whole area gives under weight. The type of unit is listed in the specification of each model and in the “Filling” filter.
Does the height of a mattress matter?
Height on its own does not decide how comfortable a mattress is. It matters for fit: before buying, check it against the depth of the bed, the height of the headboard and your fitted sheets. The height of each model is given in its specification.
How long does a spring mattress last?
There is no single figure: it depends on the load, on the base under the mattress and on care. The warranty is a separate matter: most Veneto mattresses for home use carry 20 years, but other terms apply to individual models and components. Signs that a mattress is due for replacement are permanent dents and springs you can feel.
