Straight, corner or stationary

The first decision is the shape, and it depends less on taste than on how much free wall and floor you have.

Folding mechanism

The mechanism decides how much effort and space the sofa asks of you every evening. There are four in this section, and each model states which one it has.

Eurobook

Sheldon, Harold, Chester NEW, Sidney, Richard New, Nolan. The seat rolls forward and the back drops into the space it leaves. One movement, no effort — the most common and the simplest mechanism.

Click-clack

Mark, Samba New, Patrik. Three positions: sit upright, recline halfway, or open out fully. Handy when the sofa faces a television.

Walking mechanism

Deni. The seat slides smoothly forward and down — no pulling the sofa away from the wall, and no scratched floor.

Swivel

Gabriel. One part lifts, the other rotates in the lower plane. A full double bed in two movements.

Spring unit or springless

Second in importance after the mechanism. The filling is what decides whether the sofa sags in the middle three years from now.

Some models — Deni, Gabriel, Chester NEW, Richard New — offer a choice between the Multi Pocket Spring TPS and a Bonnell block. Mark, Sheldon and Patrik are springless.

What is inside

These are the same names that appear in each model’s specification, where you can see exactly what a given sofa carries.

• Frame — Solid wood, plywood, particle board and fibreboard in various combinations. Mark, Samba New and Patrik use a metal frame. The seat base often rests on beech slats.
• Multi Pocket Spring TPS block — Every spring in its own pocket. The same principle as in Veneto mattresses.
• Bonnell spring block — Springs linked to one another: an even balance and a long service life.
• Ecofoam orthopaedic foam — The main working layer. It holds its shape and does not settle under weight.
• Memoryfoam — Responds to body heat and follows your shape. Mark and Gabriel carry it as the top layer.
• Aero Latex foam — Springier and more breathable. Found in Harold and Sidney.
• ReFiberMix thermal felt — A dividing layer between springs and foam, so the springs cannot press through the soft layers.
• ThermoFiber polyester fibre — A lofty layer that makes the seat soft without letting you sink.
• Protect Layer — A protective interlayer that extends the life of the filling.
• Calico inner cover — Patrik has a second cover under the upholstery, so the outer fabric can come off and the sofa stays closed.

Sizes and seating

All dimensions in the specifications are in millimetres, exactly as for the beds and mattresses. Look past the overall size to the seat height and depth: those are what decide whether it is comfortable.

Sleeping area

From 900 × 2000 mm on the narrowest Patrik to 1700 × 2300 mm on Harold and Sidney. A double starts at 1400 × 2000.

Folded footprint

From 900 × 980 × 920 mm on Patrik to 3030 × 2220 × 1000 mm on the Gabriel corner sofa. This is the number to measure against your room before ordering.

Seat height

From 390 to 490 mm. Lower is a lounge seat, higher is easier to get out of. Chester NEW is the lowest, Gabriel the highest.

Seat depth

From 550 to 870 mm. Deep sofas suit sitting with your feet up; shallower ones suit sitting upright in conversation.

Floor clearance

From 10 to 180 mm. It matters if you run a robot vacuum: it passes under Nolan, Patrik and Lorens, but not under Samba New.

Load rating

From 100 to 120 kg per seat, depending on the model.

Ten of the twelve models have a linen box — all except Lorens and Patrik. Removable cushions come on every one.

How to choose

Five checks worth making before you order.

• Mark the opened-out footprint on the floor with masking tape — it is more honest than imagining it from the figures.
• If someone will sleep on it every night, choose a model with a spring unit and a proper sleeping area of 1400 mm or more.
• Check the sofa fits through your doors and lift: corner models ship in parts, but the seat is one piece.
• For a corner model, decide which side the corner goes on beforehand — it is set during assembly, not after.
• If there is nowhere to keep bedding, look at the models with a box; Richard New has two, under the armrest and under the seat.

Care

A few habits that add years to a sofa.

• Vacuum the upholstery with a soft attachment once a week, and take the cushions off to beat them.
• Every few months swap the cushions around so they settle evenly.
• Deal with a spill straight away, blotting rather than rubbing.
• Open the sofa smoothly rather than with a jerk: the mechanism is built for a gentle action.
• Keep the sofa away from radiators and direct sunlight — fabric fades.
