Types of bed

The section falls into three groups, separated less by looks than by construction and by who the bed is for.

Sleeping area size

Sizes are given in millimetres: the first number is the width of the sleeping area, the second its length. It is the same grid the mattresses use, so bed and mattress match without any converting.

900 × 2000

Single. For a child, a teenager, or a small guest room.

1200 × 2000

Small double. Room to spare for one adult.

1400 × 2000

The smallest double. A little tight for two adults.

1600 × 2000

The most common double size. A sensible balance between comfort and floor space.

1800 × 2000

A comfortable double: each of you has room, and turning over does not wake the other.

2000 × 2000

The largest we make. It needs a big bedroom, with space to walk round at least three sides.

Buy the mattress to exactly this size, not approximately: a couple of centimetres of slack eventually lets the mattress shift, and shifting means creaking.

Lifting mechanism and linen drawer

The second decision after size. The mechanism raises the whole sleeping area together with the mattress and opens a box the full footprint of the bed.

On most upholstered models the mechanism and the box are chosen at order time. Julie, Nikki, Valery and Trinity do without them by design: these are beds on legs.

What they are made of

The part you cannot see in a photograph, and the part that decides whether the bed will creak in three years.

• Frame — A metal frame at the corners, or a podium running the perimeter, on most models. A few beds use a board and plywood body.
• Mattress base — An orthopaedic mesh base. Nikki and Valery use beech slats, which flex and work together with the mattress.
• Centre rail — An extra rail across the bed under the mattress. At 1600 mm and wider it is what keeps the base from sagging.
• Headboard — Padded, with foam and synthetic wadding. The stitching differs: geometric on Blues, vertical on Melissa, buttoned in the carriage style on Sharon.
• Lifting mechanism — On gas shock absorbers, with two lifting positions on some models.
• Solid wood — Julie and Cwellyn are oak. Not veneer, not board printed to look like wood: the grain on the surface is real.
• Upholstery — Fabrics from our own collections, made to order.

Fabrics and finishes

One model, dozens of looks. It is the fabric rather than the shape that decides whether a bed belongs in the room.

Eleven fabric collections

Standart, Freedom, Glow, Symphony, Loft, Polaris, Palladium, Vogue, Diva, Genesis and Anthology, each with its own textures and palette. Samples are gathered in the Fabric section.

Two fabrics in one bed

Valery has a double headboard that can be made up in two different fabrics — the simplest way to end up with a bed nobody else has.

Wood finishes

For the wooden models: natural wax oil, white oil or smoked oil. The oil soaks into the solid wood and leaves the grain visible.

How to choose

Four checks worth making before you order rather than after delivery.

• Measure the room including the walkways: you need to reach the bed from at least one side, and with a lifting mechanism you also need clear floor in front to raise it.
• Check the bed will pass through your doors and stairwell — the large sizes ship flat, but the headboard is one piece.
• If the bedroom has no room for a wardrobe, the linen box solves a problem you would otherwise solve with more furniture.
• Order the mattress together with the bed: the sizes then match for certain, and set promotions apply.

Care

A few habits that add years to a bed.

• Vacuum the upholstery with a soft attachment once a week, headboard included.
• Deal with a spill straight away, blotting rather than rubbing.
• Once a year, tighten the frame fixings: a season of daily use works them loose.
• Keep the bed away from radiators and direct sunlight: fabric fades and solid wood dries out.
• Air the linen box whenever you raise the bed — a closed volume collects moisture.
