An armchair is not bought instead of a sofa but alongside one: somewhere to sit with a book, a coffee, or simply apart from everyone else. There are four models here, from a compact 65 cm wide chair to a folding one that becomes a full sleeping place. Here is how to choose between them.
They differ less in looks than in how much room they take and what they can do.
The smallest in the section. It fits a bedroom corner, a child’s room or a balcony where nothing wider would go. A wooden frame and a broad palette of fabrics let it disappear into any interior.
A low seat, a gently reclined back and wide side panels, in a soft-touch fabric. This is not a chair for working at a desk but for an evening with a book.
The widest of the non-folding models. A 9 mm plywood seat, an 18 mm bent-glued plywood back and 16 mm sanded board armrests — a construction that does not wobble.
The Aleko transform mechanism turns the chair into a full sleeping place. It measures 1100 × 870 × 780 mm, stands on lacquered alder legs and is rated to 120 kg. A rescue when a guest stays the night and there is no spare room.
The construction is similar across all four; what differs is the thicknesses and what sits on top.
Four things worth settling before you order.
A few habits that add years to an armchair.
