VENETO toppers — how to change the comfort of a bed without changing the mattress

A topper is a thin springless mattress laid on top of the main mattress or of a sofa. It helps change how the surface feels: softer, springier or firmer — and it also smooths out the joins between the sections of a sofa bed.

A topper is not a full replacement for a mattress. It is an extra comfort layer for a sleeping place you already have.

The VENETO collection has models of different firmness, height and combination of materials. To choose yours, first decide what exactly you want to change.

When do you need a topper?

A topper is most often chosen in a few situations.

The mattress feels too firm

A softer topper adds a comfort layer on top and changes how the surface feels, without having to replace the main mattress straight away.

You want a springier or firmer surface

Models with the right materials and firmness can make the bed feel denser.

You sleep on a sofa bed

A topper creates a single surface over the sections of the sofa and helps make the joins between them less noticeable.

You need an extra sleeping place

A topper is convenient as an extra comfort layer on a suitable base, when a sleeping place is being arranged temporarily.

It is important to remember, though, that a topper cannot put right a badly damaged mattress or sofa. If the base has sagged or deformed badly, the problem with the main sleeping place has to be dealt with first.

What can a topper change, and what can it not?

A topper can noticeably change how the surface feels, but not the construction of the mattress underneath it.

It can:

  • make the bed softer or firmer;
  • add an extra comfort layer;
  • smooth out the joins of a sofa bed;
  • help adapt the bed to new preferences in firmness.

But a topper does not restore broken springs, does not repair a damaged base and does not remove the significant dips of an old mattress.

If a mattress has substantially lost its shape, replacing it is the sounder decision.

Soft, medium or firm?

This is the main question when choosing a topper.

Soft

Soft

It suits you if the main sleeping surface feels too hard and you want a softer feel.

VENETO Aero, for example, is Soft in firmness and 40 mm high.

Medium

Medium

The compromise, if the character of the bed does not need changing substantially but you want to add one more comfort layer.

Hard

Firm

Worth considering if the surface feels too soft and you want a denser, springier feel.

Some VENETO toppers have two sides of different firmness. VENETO Breeze, for example, has Hard / Medium sides. That lets you change the feel of the surface simply by turning the topper over.

What materials are used?

Different VENETO models have different combinations of fillings. It is largely they that shape how a topper feels.

  • Memoryfoam — An anatomical foam that adapts to the contours of the body and creates a softer, more enveloping feel.
  • Latex Care — Natural latex — a springy, elastic material used in the comfort layers.
  • Aero Latex — A latexed foam with a springy character. In VENETO Breeze, for example, it is combined with Latex Care natural latex.
  • Ecofoam — An orthopaedic foam which, depending on the construction of the model, can be used to form a springier, more stable layer.
  • Cocos Shield — Natural latexed coconut — a dense material used in models where a firmer side has to be formed.

The composition of each topper is better judged together with its stated firmness: one material does not decide how the whole product feels without the other layers being taken into account.

Which height to choose?

VENETO toppers are shallow compared with ordinary mattresses. The exact height depends on the model.

A thinner topper changes the overall height of the bed less and is convenient when the feel of the surface needs only moderate correction.

A taller topper has more material in its construction and can change the comfort of the bed more noticeably.

But greater height by itself does not mean a topper is automatically better. What matters is the combination of materials, the firmness, and the problem you want to solve.

How to match the size?

A topper has to match the size of the surface it is used on.

If the mattress is 1600 × 2000 mm, the topper is also worth choosing at 1600 × 2000 mm. That lets it sit flat across the surface with nothing overhanging.

For a sofa, measure the unfolded sleeping area first, not the outer dimensions of the furniture.

The available sizes depend on the particular topper model, so check the options on the product page before ordering.

A removable cover — when does it matter?

Some VENETO toppers have a removable outer cover.

VENETO Breeze, for example, has a removable cover in Mint Wave and Mint Point fabrics, and inside it a separate knitted cover of 100% cotton.

If being able to take the outer cover off matters to you, check this on the particular model.

The cover has to be cared for in line with the manufacturer's recommendations on the label and in the product instructions.

A topper and a mattress protector are different things

They are easy to confuse, but they do different jobs.

  • A topper changes the comfort and the firmness of the bed through its inner layers of filling.
  • A mattress protector is used first of all as an extra protective layer for the mattress.

So one product does not necessarily replace the other. Where needed, a topper and a protector can be used together, in line with the recommendations for those particular products.

A topper or a new mattress?

Go by the condition of the main sleeping place.

If the mattress is level and sound but you do not like its firmness, or you want to change how the surface feels, a topper can be a practical answer.

If the problem is the joins of a sofa bed, a topper can likewise make the surface more comfortable.

But if the mattress has significant dips, broken springs, deformed edges or other serious defects, a topper will not remove the cause of the problem. In that case a new mattress is what to consider.

How to choose a topper in a few minutes?

Start with five questions:

  • What are you putting the topper on — a mattress or a sofa bed?
  • What needs changing — making the surface softer, firmer, or simply more comfortable?
  • What size is the sleeping area?
  • Do you want two sides of different firmness?
  • Does a removable cover matter to you?

After that you are no longer comparing every model, but a few toppers that answer your particular problem.

Looking after a topper

The rules of care depend on the materials and the construction of the particular model.

Do not bend or store a topper in a way the manufacturer has not provided for. Protect it from excess moisture, and after wet cleaning let it dry completely before use.

For models with a removable cover, follow the care recommendations given for that particular fabric.

If the topper is double-sided, use both sides according to their firmness and your own preferences.

Questions and answers

Can a topper replace a mattress?
No. A topper is a thin extra layer that changes how the surface feels, but it does not give the support a mattress does. It will not put right a mattress that has sagged, and it is not meant to be slept on permanently straight on the floor.
What height of topper should I choose?
A thinner topper adjusts the feel lightly; a higher one changes the surface more noticeably and smooths the joins of a sofa better. Bear in mind that a topper raises the sleeping place: check that your fitted sheets will still fit. The height of each model is given in its specification.
Can a topper go on a sofa?
Yes, a topper smooths the joins between the sections of a sofa bed. Measure the unfolded sleeping place itself, not the overall dimensions of the sofa, and compare it with the sizes on the topper’s product page. If the sleeping place of the sofa is a different size, ask our staff.
