When choosing a sofa or a bed, the first things we look at are shape, colour and price. But there is one detail that determines how your furniture will look in five years — the upholstery fabric. It takes everything on a daily basis: morning coffee in bed, the cat's claws, kids' games and binge-watching evenings.

That is what the Martindale method is for — an international abrasion-resistance test that, in a few dozen hours in the lab, "lives through" years of real-life use on behalf of the fabric. What the Martindale method is

The Martindale test is a standardised laboratory method for measuring a fabric's resistance to abrasion. The idea is simple: a fabric sample is rubbed thousands of times with an abrasive material, and the machine counts how many cycles (movements) it withstands before visible signs of wear appear on the surface.

The result is called Martindale cycles (or rub count) — and it is the key abrasion-resistance benchmark for furniture fabrics in Europe and Ukraine. The test procedure is described in the international standards ISO 12947, ASTM D4966 and EN 14465, which is why its results are recognised by furniture factories and laboratories from Europe to the US.

A bit of history. The method appeared in the UK in the mid-20th century and takes its name from the machine it runs on — the Martindale tester. The idea proved so successful that it replaced subjective "by eye" assessments: the test delivered identical, reproducible results in any laboratory in the world. Today it is the "gold standard" for furniture textiles.

How the test works: step by step

  1. Sample preparation. The fabric is fixed in the machine's holders as two round discs.
  2. Choosing the abrasive. A standard dense wool fabric is placed under the sample (for particularly coarse materials — a metal mesh).
  3. Pressure. The sample is subjected to a standardised load — usually 12 kPa for furniture fabrics, imitating the pressure of a seated person.
  4. Lissajous trajectory motion. The holders "draw" a figure-of-eight-like pattern: the direction of friction constantly changes — just like in real life, when we sit down, stand up and shift around. This is the method's key advantage: it imitates multi-directional wear, not linear rubbing.
  5. Counting and finish. The counter records every cycle. The test stops when signs of destruction appear: two broken threads, a hole, or noticeable surface wear. The number of cycles withstood is the fabric's result.

An interesting detail: a standard machine has 4, 6 or 8 working positions, so several fabrics are tested in parallel. And to "rack up" 100,000 cycles, the machine has to run non-stop for more than a day.

  • Bedroom (bed headboard, bench, pouf). Here what matters is tactility and colour, not abrasion-resistance records. 10,000–15,000 cycles is enough. Feel free to choose velvet, velour or bouclé that create cosiness.
  • Living room, a household of 2–3 people without pets. The standard scenario is 20,000–25,000 cycles. That is most quality furniture fabrics on the market.
  • Big family, kids, everyday use. 30,000–40,000 cycles plus an easy clean treatment, from which juice or chocolate stains wipe off with a damp cloth.
  • You have pets at home. From 40,000 cycles and "anti-claw" type fabrics: flock, dense microfibre, short-pile velours. The secret is a tight weave without loops for a claw to catch on.
  • Dining area, kitchen corner. From 30,000 cycles, and here stain resistance and easy cleaning become critical.
  • Café, office, hotel. From 40,000 cycles; for hotel lobbies and restaurants with heavy guest flow — from 50,000.

Myth: "a high cycle count automatically means high quality"

This is the most common buyer mistake. Very high figures often mean a coarser, stiffer fabric that is less pleasant to the touch. A 90,000-cycle material will live a great life on an airport bench, but on a home sofa it will feel "plasticky".

The right approach is not the maximum, but enough for your scenario plus comfort. A soft fabric at 35,000 cycles is the perfect balance for a family sofa: both durability and the pleasure of touch.

What matters besides cycles: 4 more quality parameters

  1. Pilling resistance (ISO 12945). Pilling is the little "bobbles" on the surface. It is rated on a scale from 1 to 5: for velour, chenille or flock look for a rating of 4–5. Fun fact: the pilling test is run on the very same Martindale machine.
  2. Colour fastness (ISO 105). It determines whether the fabric fades in the sun and whether it transfers colour onto clothes. If the sofa will stand near a panoramic window, light fastness should be at least 5.
  3. Composition. Synthetics (polyester, microfibre) are usually the most durable. Natural fibres (cotton, wool) "breathe" and feel nice but wear out faster. The golden mean is blended fabrics, where 70–80% synthetics are complemented by natural fibres.
  4. Weave density. A tight satin with a fine weave is always more durable than a loose weave with the same cycle count in its spec sheet.

Martindale vs Wyzenbeek: don't confuse the scales

In the US, abrasion resistance is often measured with the Wyzenbeek method (ASTM D4157): the fabric is rubbed not in circles but back and forth with a cotton abrasive. These numbers cannot be compared directly: 30,000 Martindale cycles are not the same as 30,000 Wyzenbeek "double rubs". European and Ukrainian furniture makers mostly rely on Martindale — that is the number to look for in the specifications.

  2. Is there an easy clean / anti-stain treatment?

  5. What are the care recommendations?

And do a mini-test in the showroom: squeeze the fabric in your palm for 5 seconds (deep creases are a sign the fabric will wrinkle) and run your palm against the pile — no fibres should be left in your hand.

How to care for upholstery so it lasts longer

Even a 50,000-cycle fabric ages faster without care:

  • Vacuum the upholstery once a week with a soft brush attachment.
  • Clean up spills immediately: blot the stain, do not rub it.
  • Use mild products without chlorine or solvents.
  • Keep furniture away from direct sunlight — it "eats" the colour.
  • Rotate cushions from time to time so wear is even.
  • Do not let pets jump on the armrests — that is where upholstery wears out fastest.
