How long a mattress lasts and when it is time to replace it

There is no single figure: the service life of a mattress depends on the materials, the load, the base and the care it gets. There is no universal term for all mattresses. It is more reliable to look not at the calendar but at the condition of the particular product, the way it is used and the signs of wear described below.

What service life depends on

Load. The specification of every model gives its permissible load. If a mattress constantly works at the limit or beyond it, the layers and springs tire sooner. So it is worth taking a margin when buying.

The base. This is the most common cause of premature wear. On a bowed, broken or too sparse a slatted base the mattress sags between the supports, and in time hollows form there.

Materials. Dense foam, latex and a good spring unit hold their shape longer than loose, cheap layers. The type of construction guarantees nothing in itself: a good springless mattress will outlive a poor spring one, and the other way round.

How it is used. A mattress for everyday sleep wears faster than a guest one. Children jumping, the habit of sitting on the same edge, spilt liquid — all of this shortens its life.

Care. Protection from moisture and dust, airing and regular turning noticeably extend the life of a mattress.

Signs that it is time to replace a mattress

Age is only a reason to take a closer look. It is worth replacing when one or more of these signs appear:

  • Hollows and humps. Lay a long straight batten on the mattress or stretch a cord from edge to edge. A noticeable gap where you sleep means the layers have settled.
  • Rolling. You are pulled towards the middle or towards your partner.
  • Springs can be felt with the body, or you hear creaking and clicking inside the mattress rather than in the bed.
  • The edges have “given way”: sitting on the edge, you slide off.
  • You sleep worse at home than elsewhere. If you sleep better in a hotel or at friends', and at home your body is stiff in the morning, the mattress may be the cause.
  • A smell or stains that will not come out, traces of damp or mould.

If the mattress is still level but has become too firm or too soft for you, a topper is sometimes enough. A hollow, though, a topper will not put right — it will follow its shape. If a defect appears within the warranty period, contact the seller. For most Veneto mattresses in home use the warranty is 20 years; for individual models and parts, such as the cover, other terms apply. The exact list and conditions are on the warranty page.

The right base

A mattress needs level support and air from below. A slatted base gives this best: the slats support the mattress across its whole area, and it ventilates between them.

If your bed is old, check it before laying a new mattress: are all the slats whole, have they bowed, has the frame worked loose? The base can be replaced on its own. In the bed frames collection there are, for example, the Classic Multi Bed Frame — a metal base with wide beech slats — and the Veneto Comfort Bed Frame with beech slats 38 mm wide.

To stop the underside of the cover rubbing on the base, a Veneto Mattress pad can be laid between them: it is a layer of dense ReFiberMix felt that separates the mattress from the slats.

A mattress should not be kept on the floor permanently: there is no movement of air underneath, and the moisture the body gives off overnight does not escape.

Protection from moisture and dust

The simplest way to extend the life of a mattress is a mattress protector. It is easy to take off and wash; a mattress is not.

  • The Veneto Safe Mattress Cover is moisture-proof, with a membrane fabric. It is the one to have if there are children or pets in the house, or if you like coffee in bed.
  • The Veneto Thermo mattress cover is cotton calico with a thin layer of ThermoFiber fibre. It protects against dust and household soiling, but not against liquid.

Both are held on with elastic. The other models are in the mattress protectors collection.

A care schedule

When What to do
Regularly Before making the bed, leave it uncovered for a short while to air
Every time you change the bedding Air the mattress without a sheet, inspect the protector
According to the instructions for the particular model Rotate the mattress head to foot; turn onto the other side only models that provide for it
During routine care Vacuum the surface and check the condition of the slats
As needed Clean stains with a barely damp cloth and a mild product, without soaking the mattress

A mattress needs rotating so that the load does not fall on the same places year after year. Only models designed for it may be turned onto the other side: double-sided ones, “winter/summer” ones or those marked as flippable — the Veneto Dynamic LUX Mattress, for example. If you are not sure about your model, look at its specification.

What a mattress does not like

  • Jumping and walking on it. A point impact load breaks springs and tears layers.
  • Bending. Spring mattresses and models with a coir layer must not be folded in half or rolled up.
  • Water and steam. Do not soak stains, do not dry with an iron or a hairdryer, and do not use a steam cleaner unless the instructions allow it.
  • Foreign objects underneath. Boards or blankets “for firmness” block ventilation and deform the mattress.
  • Long storage on its edge. If the mattress has to be put away for a long time, keep it flat, in a dry room, in a cover that lets air through, and put nothing on top of it.

A mattress is also best transported lying flat and without bending. How delivery works is described on the delivery page.

In short

  • Service life depends on the materials, the load, the base and care; there is no single figure.
  • Replace a mattress by the signs of wear: hollows, rolling, creaking inside, worse sleep.
  • A level slatted base and a mattress protector are the two most effective ways to extend its life.
  • Rotate or turn a mattress only in the way, and as often as, the instructions for the particular model allow; one-sided models are not turned over.

Frequently asked questions

Can a mattress be stored upright?

Briefly, yes — during a renovation or a move, for example. For long storage lay it flat: on its edge the layers gradually slip under their own weight.

Does a mattress need turning over?

Rotating it head to foot is good for any mattress. Turn it onto the other side only if the model is double-sided; this is stated in the specification.

Can the mattress cover be washed?

Only if it is removable and the care label allows it. A non-removable cover is spot-cleaned, and is protected from soiling by a mattress protector.

The mattress is level, but sleeping on it has become uncomfortable. Replace it?

Not necessarily. First check the base and the pillow, and try rotating the mattress. If your weight or usual sleeping position has changed, a topper may help.
