A bed base is what holds the mattress from below: a frame with slats. It decides whether the mattress's orthopaedic effect actually works and how long the mattress lasts. Below: what makes one base different from another, how slat spacing relates to load, and what to look at before buying.
Why the base matters more than it looks
One comparison explains it: muscles and the spine. The mattress is the spine, the base is the muscles. Weak muscles, and even a strong spine starts to deform under load. It is the same with a mattress: on a poor base it does not work the way it was designed to, and it loses its shape sooner.

Flexible curved wooden slats in slat holders. They flex together with the mattress, spread the weight evenly and leave air underneath.
What a base is made of
Bases differ in three things: what the frame is made of, what the slats are made of, and what holds them.
Side rails — the frame — Wooden or metal. Veneto builds a metal rim around the perimeter with metal rails: metal beats wood on strength, and such a base costs less than an all-wood one.
Slats — Wooden, metal or plastic. Plastic is cheaper but wears out quickly and carries less weight. Metal slats do not flex at all — that is a near-solid base, only ventilated. Wood flexes, and beech is considered the best of it.
Species — Beech, ash, pine, birch. Beech combines flex with durability — which is why Veneto bases run on beech slats.
Metal coating — Powder polyester paint: it protects the metal from corrosion and gives off no smell in the room.
Slat holders — The fittings each slat sits in. They wear out before the slat does, so the quality of the hardware matters here as much as the quality of the wood.
Twin slats and adjusters — Two boards one above the other instead of one. That means both a higher load rating and the option to tune the firmness in the lower-back zone to yourself.
Slat spacing and load
Spacing is the gap between neighbouring slats. It is what sets how much the base takes and which mattress can go on it.
52 — 65 mm
Up to 80 kg per sleeping place including the mattress. Suits sprung mattresses whose spring diameter is larger than the gap between the slats.
30 — 45 mm
Up to 100 kg. Any mattress can go on it.
under 30 mm
Up to 130 kg per sleeping place. Any mattress.
Twin slats raise that ceiling noticeably: the load is shared between two boards instead of one.

What it does for your back
Four things flexible slats do and a solid sheet does not.
They spread body weight evenly instead of collecting it in one spot.
They hold the spine in its correct anatomical shape all night.
They let the muscles relax completely — which is what decides whether you actually slept.
They reduce the load on joints and blood vessels during sleep.
On top of that comes ventilation: air moves freely under the mattress, so it stays dry and lasts longer.
How to choose
Five checks worth doing before you order, not after the delivery.
Take the base size exactly to the mattress, not "about" it: a couple of centimetres of gap will shift the mattress over time and make it creak.
Work out the maximum load per sleeping place from the slat spacing — and buy with margin, not right at the limit.
Run your hand over the wood and the metal: rough patches, dents or chips on a new base are a reason to walk away.
Glue in the joints is a bad sign: a strong joint holds on hardware, not on glue.
Twin slats and firmness adjusters are what is worth paying for: the mattress works properly and the firmness can be tuned to you.
Care
A base needs no weekly attention, but it is worth a visit once a year.
Tighten the frame fittings once a year: a season of daily load works them loose a little.
Check the slat holders — a cracked holder is replaced on its own and costs pennies; a slat broken because of it does not.
Do not sit on the edge of the base: slats are built for even load, not for a point load.
When you lift the mattress to air it, wipe the dust off the base — that is exactly where it settles.
