How to choose a mattress filler: tips from the manufacturer Veneto

After all, modern types of mattress fillings:

  • reliably support the spine;
  • reduce back and neck pain;
  • conform to the shape of the body;
  • prevent the development of allergies and the growth of mites and bacteria;
  • create comfortable conditions for rest (warmth in winter, quality ventilation and pleasant coolness in summer).

What are the fillings for mattresses?

On the photo of the mattress in the section, you can see many different layers. Both spring and springless models are most often multi-layered, and each material has certain characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. The best common mattress fillings are coconut coir, polyurethane foam, latex, felt, foam, and wool.

Coconut

Natural coconut has the following properties: it does not rot, it prevents the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, it is springy (it contains lignin, a natural polymer), it is ventilated and does not retain moisture inside. The use of coir allows you to create the best orthopedic designs of medium and increased rigidity, which can be used in the correction of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. It can be found in children's models, because a firm foundation for sleep is the key to health and proper development of vertebrae at an early age. Mattresses with natural latexed coconut are safe, because this material is hypoallergenic, “breathes”, prevents the occurrence of fungus, bacteria and mites.
Coconut filler for mattresses is combined with foam and other bases to get practical and comfortable two-sided variants. The disadvantages of coir include high cost, so some manufacturers replace it with less durable needle-punched fiber to reduce the price.

Polyurethane foam

Quite often polyurethane foam is used in the manufacture of mattresses, as it is affordable and has a number of positive operational characteristics. PPU is a modern version of foam, which contains additional components that provide: anatomical effect (repeats the shape and curves of the body), quality support of the spine, as a consequence, a comfortable sleep. A significant disadvantage of polyurethane foam is its lower durability compared to other materials.

Latex

Depending on the origin, natural latex (made from processed and foamed sap of rubber tree - hevea) and synthetic latex are distinguished.

Advantages are: sufficient rigidity (especially in synthetic), free air circulation, ability to maintain an optimal moisture balance, hypoallergenic, dense texture that does not allow the growth of bacteria, ability to follow the contours of the body and relieve the back, durability (service life of 30 years and more). It is often used in combination with other padding, and the disadvantage is considered a high price. Latex mattresses are suitable for people with impaired functionality of bones and joints.

Wool is obtained by combining and pressing at high temperatures natural and artificial fibers (linen, wool, etc.). The material can be soft and hard, used as a barrier between the other layers. The felt layer is often present in spring models, redistributing the weight of the person lying on the entire perimeter of the structure

From the classic felt, modern variations of this material have been created:

  • Termoflex - a tough and durable fabric that guarantees durability and protection of soft matter from damage to the spring unit.
  • Termoflex - the fabric is made of regenerated cotton and polyester fibers arranged horizontally. Special production technology ensures high elasticity and breathability.
  • Spunbond - non-woven fabric with a dense structure and optimal hygroscopicity, creates optimal conditions for long-term use, evenly distributing the load over the entire area.
  • Sprut - lightweight bulk fabric made of cotton fibers and wool. It is characterized by significant resistance to deformation and UV resistance. Suitable for allergy sufferers.
  • Struttofiber is used to create durable and reliable surfaces due to the vertical arrangement of fibers. It is used for the device of a frame base, which is supplemented with various components to obtain certain properties: lightness, density, heat conservation, air circulation. It is used as an additional layer. The advantage is the prolongation of the service life of the product, and the disadvantage is a rather high price.

Increasingly, however, traditional bases are being replaced by foamed substances, which are available in several varieties:

  • Mineral. It is characterized by considerable density and elasticity, with a good anatomical effect. It is ideal for people whose work is repetitive; associated with physical labor and athletes. The foam relieves pressure on the back, reduces pressure on joints and bones.
  • Memory Foam is a special material with a “memory” function. It is made of dense polyurethane with the addition of latex. Its distinctive characteristic is its strong sensitivity to changes in load, which allows it to instantly adjust to the sleeping position. Memory Foam is ideal for those who suffer from neck and vertebral pain, it helps to adopt any comfortable position and fully relax during a night's rest. It is noteworthy that when the load is removed, the surface is completely leveled in seconds.
  • OrmaFoam is a budget variety of foam produced from polyurethane foam. Comfortable sleep is guaranteed by high-quality spinal support, even pressure distribution and repetition of the contours of the sleeping body. Well ventilated, hygroscopic.
  • Spring Foam is a cellular synthetic substance that provides excellent thermoregulation regardless of the season. It is characterized by wear resistance and excellent ventilation. Significant density prevents the reproduction of dust mites and other pathogens
  • Othoflex is a hypoallergenic elastic structure that ensures the correct sleeping position. It has a massaging effect and high density, which prevents deformation even under intensive loads.

Other fillers in the padding also use wool. The layer helps to retain heat and create an optimal microclimate in the bed, and contact with it helps to normalize pressure. This layer absorbs moisture, but dries quickly, and is practical and durable.

Cotton. A gentle and pleasant hygroscopic fabric that can eliminate excess heat, providing additional comfort during sleep. Most often used to provide thermoregulation in double-sided models (winter-summer).
Synthetic down. Soft and lightweight, voluminous non-woven material made of silicone spiral fibers. Able to quickly restore its shape after compression. The texture is similar to bird down, and it is more elastic, does not cause allergies and provides thermal insulation.

Hollofiber - interwoven, hollow polyester fibers that allow air to pass through, retain heat, and do not absorb moisture and odors. Suitable for asthmatics and allergy sufferers.  When trying to choose which filler is better for a mattress, you should focus on individual needs and personal preferences.

The best mattress filler can be chosen based on its key properties:

Naturalness. Natural substances are more environmentally friendly than artificial ones, although they are more expensive. Sleeping on natural materials is more natural and pleasant for a person, but in some cases it can cause an allergic reaction. Air permeability, which means comfort and safety of sleep, depends on the filler in the mattress. Dense structures will accumulate moisture, causing mold and rotting of the structure from the inside, absorb unpleasant odors, and provoke allergies and skin diseases.

Hardness. The appropriate hardness is selected according to individual and medical indications.

Soft is suitable for people with diseases of the musculoskeletal system, blood vessels, joints, the elderly and those who like to sleep on their side.

Medium is ideal for back diseases.

Rigid ones are necessary in childhood from birth until the final formation of the spine, as well as in the presence of intervertebral hernias and posture disorders. Combination mattresses allow you to change the firmness by turning the product to one side or the other according to your health and mood.
